I got a call around 11pm Nigerian time about 13 months ago, and immediately, I wondered why my dear friend would reach out that late.

It was unusual. We had spoken several times before, but a call at that hour usually meant something important had happened.

A few moments into the conversation, he shared the news.

“I got admission into a Canadian university, and I called to give you the good news.”

I was genuinely happy for him.

But as our conversation continued, I remember him explaining why he had decided to take that leap. For him, it was not simply about getting a foreign degree or experiencing life in another country.

He believed studying in Canada would give him the opportunity to grow professionally, develop his career and improve his earning potential.

That conversation stayed with me because it reflects something I have noticed about people who decide to study abroad.

People do not always leave their home countries for the same reasons.

For one person, it may be about education. For another, it may be career growth. Someone else may want a new cultural experience, while another person may simply be looking for opportunities they believe are difficult to find at home.

So, why do people choose to travel abroad to study?

Here are 10 common reasons.

For many students, the quality and range of academic opportunities available abroad are a major attraction.

They may be interested in a particular course, specialisation, research opportunity, teaching approach or university facility that is not easily available in their home country.

Studying abroad can also expose students to different academic perspectives and learning environments.

For some, that exposure is just as valuable as the qualification itself.

This was particularly important to my friend.

Many people see international education as an investment in their future career.

They are not only thinking about what happens during the degree. They are thinking about what comes afterwards.

Will the qualification help me compete for better opportunities?

Can I develop skills that employers value?

Can I build professional relationships in an international environment?

These questions often influence the decision to study abroad.

Some students want more than classroom knowledge.

They want to understand how organisations operate in another country and gain exposure to international workplaces.

Depending on the country, visa conditions and programme, students may have opportunities for internships, placements or permitted employment.

That experience can help them understand different workplace cultures and develop practical skills alongside their academic qualifications.

Studying abroad gives people the opportunity to experience life beyond what they already know.

You begin to encounter different food, traditions, social habits, languages and ways of thinking.

And there is something different about experiencing a culture while actually living there.

You are no longer simply visiting as a tourist. You are attending lectures there, shopping there, making friends there and dealing with everyday life there.

That experience can broaden the way you see the world.

Moving abroad can teach you things that a classroom cannot.

You may suddenly have to manage your finances, prepare your meals, navigate public transport, deal with accommodation and make important decisions without having family members nearby.

It can be challenging.

But that challenge can also help people develop independence, confidence and responsibility.

For many students, discovering that they can successfully manage life in a new environment becomes an important part of the experience.

Another reason people study abroad is the opportunity to meet people from different parts of the world.

Your classmates may come from Nigeria, India, China, Brazil, Ghana, France or dozens of other countries.

These relationships can become much more than friendships.

Over time, they can develop into professional connections, business relationships, collaborations and lifelong friendships.

In an increasingly connected world, knowing people beyond your immediate environment can be valuable.

For students studying in a country where another language is widely spoken, studying abroad can provide an opportunity to improve their communication skills through daily use.

Even for students studying in an English speaking country, constantly communicating in academic and professional environments can improve confidence and familiarity with international communication.

You are learning not just from textbooks, but through everyday conversations.

Let us be honest.

For some people, the opportunity to travel is also part of the attraction.

Studying abroad can allow students to experience places they may previously have only seen online or in films.

There is also something exciting about discovering a new city, trying unfamiliar food, visiting landmarks and meeting people from different backgrounds.

Of course, studying should remain the primary purpose of the journey, but the opportunity to explore can certainly make the experience more memorable.

Sometimes, people need a new environment to discover a different version of themselves.

Moving away from everything familiar can challenge your assumptions, habits and comfort zone.

You may become more adaptable. You may discover new interests. You may become more confident. You may even rethink what you want from your career and your life.

Studying abroad can therefore become a personal journey as much as an academic one.

Perhaps this is the reason that sits underneath many of the others.

People want possibilities.

They want to put themselves in an environment where they believe they can build the kind of academic, professional and personal future they desire.

For some, that means gaining an international qualification.

For others, it means accessing professional opportunities, building international connections or experiencing a different society.

And for someone like my friend, it was about believing that taking that leap could help him grow professionally and improve his earning potential.

When people talk about studying abroad, it is easy to focus only on the university, tuition fees, visa requirements and admission process.

But behind every application is a person with a reason.

Someone wants a better education.

Someone wants a better career.

Someone wants to experience another culture.

Someone wants independence.

Someone wants to build a global network.

And someone simply believes that taking the risk of leaving home could create opportunities they might not otherwise have.

That is why there is no single reason why people study abroad.

Everyone has a different destination, a different motivation and a different picture of the future they are trying to build.

And sometimes, just like my friend discovered 13 months ago, taking that first leap begins with a simple decision:

“I believe there is more for me to explore, and I am willing to go and find it.”

Discuss Your Study Plans With WEML I got a call around 11pm Nigerian time about 13 months ago, and immediately, I wondered why my dear friend would reach out that late.
